Vernazza Italy – Photo By OaklandNative

Of the five villages that make up Italy’s Cinque Terre, Vernazza is the prettiest. With a beautiful natural harbor, a bustling ocean-front piazza filled with bars and cafes, and a ruined castle watching over it, Vernazza is stunning.

Today, you can reach Vernazza by automobile, though you’ll have to park at the lot above the town. There’s a shuttle that runs back and forth to the center of Vernazza so you won’t have to haul your luggage.

In town, the narrow alleyways lead to delightful arcades and charming restaurants. If the colorful houses with their tile roofs look like something out of a theme park, it’s because the zoning board dictates the pastel colors that can be used in Vernazza.

If you arrive by train, stop off at the Tourist Office in the station. For Internet access, try the Internet point or the Blue Marlin Bar.

There’s not a lot to do in Vernazza, but there are several good hikes. You can take Cinque Terre Trail Two to Corniglia or Monterossa. There’s also a trail behind the Chapel of Santa Maria that has more beautiful views, or you can hike up to the ruins of the castle. Kayak rentals are available in the harbor, and they’re a great way to explore the coast.

Of course, the most popular activity in Vernazza is sitting in a cafe with a bottle of wine and watching the world go by.

Vernazza hotels in all price ranges.

Part of the reason that the Cinque Terre is enjoyable is that it’s less developed than other parts of Italy. Although there’s certainly more here than there was twenty years ago, most of the accommodations are still small pensiones or rooms in private homes. These are called affitta camere, and they can be quite nice. If stairs are a problem, Vernazza isn’t a good choice for you because virtually all properties have them.

Click Here For The Complete list of over 50 Hotels in Vernazza with Reviews and Real Time Rates

You won’t find all the amenities and services of a three-star hotel here. Most accommodations are clean and simple, and their best feature is the view. A room with a terrace or balcony is most enjoyable, and some Vernazza hotels have common terraces or gardens so guests in rooms without them can still enjoy the wonderful scenery.

There are a couple of trattorias in town, so don’t be too concerned if your hotel doesn’t have a restaurant. Most serve breakfast and at several, you can get a drink. Of course, you can also buy a bottle of local wine to enjoy it in your room or on your balcony.

The most stylish and expensive hotel in Vernazza is La Mala, which has only four rooms. Equipped with flat screen, satellite TVs, mini bars, and featuring stone walls and wood beams, the rooms also have access to a gorgeous terrace with sweeping views of the ocean. You’ll need to reserve this one well in advance.

Trattoria Gianni Franzi is one of the best restaurants in Vernazza, and they also have two buildings with 23 hotel rooms. Those in the newer building all have private baths but lack the views of the original rooms. There’s a pretty terrace garden that all the guests can enjoy.

Located in the top two floors of an old house, Albergo Barbara has harbor views from the two rooms on the main floors. A few of the other nine rooms share a bath but have a sink.

One of the best-known hosts in Vernazza is Giuliano Basso, who built his four-room inn himself. The building and terrace were made from local stone, and there’s an orange grove beneath the hotel. Four can be accommodated in the family room, and guests can use the shared refrigerator.

Visit Derry – Northern Ireland

The city of Derry, or, Londonderry, like many places in the British Isles, has a turbulent history and has been central in the long political struggle between the Irish and English over rights to the country. Derry is the site of one of the most infamous days in the political history of the region, that known as “Bloody Sunday’, when British paratroops shot and killed thirteen unarmed civil rights marchers in 1972. Bloody Sunday remains among the most significant events in the Troubles of Northern Ireland, chiefly because those who died were shot by the British army rather than paramilitaries, in full view of the public and the press.

Today, Derry is still full of reminders of the conflict between the Loyalist and Republican factions, but the city today is a far cry from those darker times.

Mural In The Bogside – Derry Northern Ireland – Photo By Neil Rickards

Straddling the waters of the river Foyle, the old walled city sits on the “Cityside” of the river, facing the “Waterside” on the opposite bank. Derry’s city walls are some of the best preserved in Europe and a stroll around the walls offers some wonderful views across the entire city. Although not a large city, Derry is packed with historical interest and some wonderful architecture. The Bogside murals, are a huge draw for visitors nowadays and commemorate the Republican struggle for freedom. Mostly painted on the gable ends of buildings they are a striking reminder of a part the city’s more recent history.

As a visitor, wandering around the city on foot is a great way to discover all its hidden nooks and crannies and it presents a wonderful mix of the old and new in a very pedestrian friendly package.

One of the best aspects of staying in Derry however is its easy accessibility and its ideal location for exploring some of the beautiful outlying areas. Provided you have access to a car, either your own or a rental, Derry affords so many options for exploration that you can very easily fill a two week stay with different adventures every day. Located as it is, right on the border, you really do have an endless list of options.

Heading east out of the city on the main Belfast road will take you across the beautiful Glenshane Pass and the trip to Belfast by road takes about an hour and fifteen minutes on good roads. This makes a day trip entirely feasible if you want to sample all that Belfast has to offer. If you are considering splitting your trip between Ireland and Scotland, Belfast is the place to catch the ferry across to Stranraer in Scotland – the crossing takes around 90 minutes.

Derry borders the delightful county of Donegal and this is just one more great reason to select it as a base for a break in the north. Crossing the border nowadays is just a case of driving across an imaginary line – the old border controls are long gone now and the only things that indicate you have moved from Northern Ireland into Eire are the changes in the road signs, and of course, the change in currency from Sterling to the Euro, which Ireland adopted in favour of its old money, the Punt.

Donegal is so full of beautiful laces that it would be hard to visit them all on a two week trip but many of the highlights can be covered by car. Take a trip to Ireland’s most north westerly point at Malin Head, a wild and windswept headland which offers some outstanding panoramic views. The drive to Malin is crammed with scenic beauty and traffic is sparse – you will sea beautiful and deserted sandy beaches, rugged headlands and coastal scenery, hills and mountains and many quiet villages along the way.

Alternatively, drive out of the city towards the little border village of Muff for a beautiful drive along the shores of Lough Foyle and visit the small seaside village of Moville where you stroll along the water’s edge can sit and gaze across the waters at the imposing Binevenagh which dominates the landscape across the Foyle in Northern Ireland. From here, exploration of the entire Inishowen peninsular is beneath your wheels.

If you elect to spend a day or two exploring the country on the other side of the border, take a drive along the beautiful Antrim Coast, another scenic drive that takes you along the opposite side of the Foyle and on towards such famous attractions as the pretty seaside village of Portrush (location of the famous North west 200 motorcycle road races), the Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle and the famous Bushmills distillery. Continue driving around the coast road and you will eventually reach the small villages of Cushenden and Cushendall with great views out across the sea to Rathlin Island and the distant coast of western Scotland.

Dunluce Castle – County Antrim – Photo by Alex Ranaldi

Returning to Donegal, Donegal Town is located at the extreme southern end of the county and is a long drive from Derry but worth the effort for the scenery you will encounter along the way. It is quite feasible as a day trip and the roads are vastly improved from a few decades ago. Just be sure to take your camera on all your trips because you will never run out of photographic opportunities.

Closer to the City, other places to go include the delightful little town of Buncrana, very popular with Derry locals and a short drive, again full of scenic highlights with plenty of worthwhile stopping points along the way. Head out of the city towards the border at Bridgend and turn right at the mini roundabout towards Buncrana.

Alternatively, at the same road junction, continue on the main Letterkenny road and be sure to look out for the ancient site an Grianan (pronounced Greenan) which is a few miles out on the left hand side of the road. Turn up the lane and climb the hill to the top where you will discover a well preserved iron age ring fort and top of the world views across Lough Swilly, Inch Island and 360 degree panoramas of the surrounding country. Continue your drive towards Letterkenny and before entering the town take a right towards Rathmullen and Ramelton for some more wonderful vistas and quaint villages dotted around the shores of Lough Swilly.

View From Grianan Across Lough Swilly Donegal – Photo By Leppre

As you can see, the city of Derry makes a perfect base for a touring holiday of the northern part of Ireland and there is little likelihood that you will run out of places to go and things to see. Donegal will charm any visitor and make you want to come back for more, just be sure to visit a bar, and relax with a pint of the black stuff. Remember too that when ordering a pint of Guinness, expect to wait a while – there is a right way to pour the famous stout and bartenders in Ireland follow the ceremony religiously. It’s worth the time it takes.

Other places of note include the Glenveagh National Park and its gardens and stately home, a beautiful region to explore offering mountains and more incredible views and photo opportunities. Be sure to try and take a drive, or several drives, along the north west coast to visit places such as Fanad Head, The Bloody Foreland, the Isle of Aran and the numerous villages scattered along that part of the county.

Malin Head County Donegal Ireland – Photo By Michelle Kroll

A stay in Derry will leave you wanting more – the friendly and welcoming people, the astonishing scenery and the world famous atmosphere of Ireland gets into the blood and it is common to hear this ancient and beautiful land referred to as “God’s Country”. Derry, indeed Ireland as a whole, offers a genuine escape from the pressure of modern life and walkers, photographers or anyone just looking for a peaceful haven, will take a little piece of the country home with them when they leave. Roads are uncrowded, beaches are plentiful and empty, the greens really are as green as they are in your imagination and although the weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, it won’t spoil your trip. The population of Ireland is under 4.5 million – compare that with the 62.3 million crammed into mainland Britain and you can soon see why travelling by road in Ireland is so different and why the country is so very different from its neighbour across the Irish Sea.

By James Johnson

Skiathos is one of the Greek Islands which is covered in thick pine forest and is considered to be a protected environment. There are plenty of hotels and holiday properties to rent as the island is extremely popular, especially around July and August when it is very hot and there is lots to do.

Activities

The waters around Skiathos are a paradise for sailors, making it a popular activity with locals and tourists. Motorboats can be hired to go visit and explore neighbouring islands which provides a unique and interesting day out. As well as this the usual water sports and sporting activities are available.

Nightlife

Skiathos town is a cosmopolitan, energetic place with enough bars, pubs and clubs to keep everyone happy. You will find traditional British pubs filled with English holiday makers but also traditional Greek bars and classy jazz and blues clubs. Most of the bars and clubs are located in Papadiamantis. Bar Street is full of British tourists and residents whilst Stones and the Apothiki Music Hall play traditional Greek music so are more likely to be filled with locals.

Eating Out

Eating out in Skiathos is more expensive than it is on some of the less developed Greek islands and it is harder to find traditional food as it is so full of tourists. There are a few places you can get typical Greek food, such as in Psaradika where all the locals go. If it is not local food you are after then it is easy to find restaurants and cafes around the towns and villages.

Where to Stay

Hotels are graded from A down to E with A class hotels providing top of the range facilities and E class only offering the most basic accommodation. There are around 350 campsites around Skiathos which means those of you on a budget will not struggle for somewhere to stay. If you are looking for something different and adventurous, why not try holiday properties to rent, mountain refuges are located in stunning settings such as Evia. Self catering apartments are becoming increasingly popular as the number of youngsters booking package holidays increases. These apartments normally have swimming pools, sporting facilities and other activities on offer.

Attractions

Skotini is very impressive with a small opening into a 20 foot cave with many sandy coves to explore. It is recommended you get a boat to do this so you can spend a couple hours exploring at your own pace. Skiathos is known for its beautiful beaches and this is one of the many reasons people go there. The most famous is Koukounaries which is a horse shoe shaped bay on the southern tip of the island. If you want to see the hidden secrets of the island and find out about its history and culture, you can take a guided walk to the Kounistra Monastery or the Evangelistra Monastery, or a guided tour of the island that is a mix of walks and travel on a mini bus.

How many world travelers have dreamed of climbing among the towering stones of Machu Picchu? This Wonder of the World consistently tops travelers’ must-see bucket lists but many are discouraged by tales of the expense and difficulty. The truth is that travelers on a budget can still experience the trip of a lifetime with a little smart planning.

When you get to Peru, it’s impossible not to think that Machu Picchu has to be seen and this is represented in the vast amount of tourist services and itineraries that have become a mainstay of the route. Nestled on towering hills in the secluded cloud forest, it is easy to see why the Inca chose this spot to build a grand fortress getaway and why it remains so appealing. Better discounts and fewer crowds can be found in the off-season which runs from November to March.

Getting There. Machu Picchu is located several hours over land from Cusco, Peru. All visitors must fly through the international airport in Lima and then make their way to Cusco. Since flights for Cusco depart early in the day, most people are forced to spend a night in Lima. If you are not interested in sight-seeing in the sprawling capital city, the cheapest option is sleeping in the clean, secure airport until the earliest Cusco flights depart around 5am. Round trip of this one hour flight tends to add up to $300. Buses also make the trip 21-hour trip. First class companies like Cruz Del Sur offer seats on comfortable, climate controlled buses for about $60 US dollars, one way.

From Cusco you must travel to Aguas Calientes, a community about 20 minutes from Machu Picchu and not accessible by car. Expensive trains run from Cusco directly to Aguas Calientes. A cheaper way which allows you to visit the beautiful Sacred Valley is to take a car to Ollantaytambo and hop on a train at the station there. From Cusco, cars and vans make the 2 hour trip to Ollantaytambo throughout the day from taxi stands on Calle Pavitos. You may hire a private car for 50 soles if you are a hard bargainer. To travel in colectivo (with other independent travelers), a seat costs 10-12 soles. Buses departing nearby on Avenida Grau cost only 2-3 soles which are less comfortable and slower, but.

From Ollantaytambo, several trains of different classes depart daily and the cheapest seats range from $60-$150 US dollars round trip. The best deals are available at the ticket counters in Ollantaytambo, so being flexible and willing to stay in town for a day or two will help you secure the seat you want.

For the adventurous, there is currently one way to avoid the high price of a train ticket. From Ollantaytambo or Cusco, catch a bus bound for Quillabamba and take a long, winding ride over a mountain pass and into the jungle on the other side. Let the driver know you will be getting off in Santa Maria, a fare of about 15 soles. From Santa Maria, there are usually minibus colectivos for the town of Santa Teresa. Six soles and a two hour journey should get you to Santa Teresa. Once there, ask around for the path to the hydroelectric plant, or hidroelectrico. On your way, you will pull yourself over the Rio Urubamba in a small cart. On the other side, catch a produce truck heading the rest of the way or walk 2-3 hours. From the hydroelectric plant, it is 2-3 more hours on foot over mostly unused train tracks to finally make your grand entrance into Aguas Calientes.

This route offers the chance to travel like a local and, at about $20 US dollars round trip, can save you more than a hundred dollars of train tickets. Detailed information regarding transport can be found by asking people at Ollantaytambo and Cusco backpacker hostels to ensure that you don’t get stranded at any point. Several adventure tour agencies offer guided service and mountain biking along this route.

Seeing the Site. Aguas Calientes is uninteresting and overpriced but staying overnight will maximize your time at Machu Picchu. To save cash, buy food and water in Ollantaytambo or Cusco and bargain hard at the many basic hostels to find a clean bed. Before heading up to the ruins you must buy your entrance ticket online, at www.machupicchu.gob.pe, or in the tourist office in Aguas Calientes; you cannot pay at the entrance gate. Small buses run back and forth to the ruins throughout the day for $20 round trip. Nearby small offices are the best place to buy tickets. There is also a steep foot trail but many choose to save their energy and time for exploring the ruins themselves. Despite stated policies, visitors are usually allowed to bring small bags with concealed water and snacks into the site.
